If the battery is low or died and the key pad doesn't work, you can use the key to open the door. The key is in a lock box that is located outside underneath the staircase, next to a fire extinguisher. 

The door will always be locked when you close the door unless you turn the notch to vertical.

Please make sure that the notch is horizontal so that the door will be locked when you close the door.
